Pros 3-CCD imaging chips; looks great in bright light; FireWire (i.Link) connection
Cons Quirky manual lens focus; average in dim light
Recommended it? Yes

(This review is based substantially on an article I wrote for the August 6, 2003 issue of TV Technology magazine.)

A couple of years ago, I marveled at the size and capability of the Sony DSR-PD100, a three-chip DV and DVCAM (25 Mbps) camcorder with many professional features that looked... Read full review »

Excellent Prosumer Videocam!

Pros 3 CCD lenes, native 16x9 mode, manual adjustments for most things, exception picture
Cons heavy for 1 hand
Recommended it? Yes

When my little Sony PC5 palmcorder went into the shop for it's 3rd repair (after 4 years of abuse), I decided it was time for a new rig. I'd been eyeing the Panasonic DVX100 as the replacement so I could start doing some idie stuff and even a music video.

So, off to the local pro video... Read full review »

Pros Fantastic video with lownoise, exceptional audio, real 16:9, compact size, beautiful LCD/...
Cons heavy vertical smear, some ill placed controls.
Recommended it? Yes

I have been shooting with the PDX10 for about 4 months now, and I absolutely love this camcorder.
The video is brilliant, the audio is exceptional.
The 16:9 is the best around under however many thousands of dollars.
Though the low light performance does not compare to the likes of... Read full review »

Great camera in a small package

bymhudin Mar 2, 2003

Pros XLR adapters miniDV and miniDVCAM
Cons Low light not as good as PD150, VX2000
Recommended it? Yes

The low light sensitivity isn't as good as the PD150 and VX2000, but the fact that it handles 16:9 not by banding off part of the chip, but by making 4:3 the zoomed in image, it gives a better widescreen shot than any other prosumer camera I've seen. Also, while the XLR adapter looks like an... Read full review »

Picture quality is good but...

Pros None submitted
Cons None submitted
Recommended it? Yes

Picture quality is good but contrasty, tends to over expose when using auto exposure. I don't understand why ND filters are not included like with the PD150. Auto Focus also tends to be sluggish. I compared the PD150 with the PD10X and found the PD 150 better in low light although not much... Read full review »

Sony DSR-PDX10 Professional 1/4.7" 16:9 3CCD DVCAM Compact Camcorder with 3.5 inch LCD Monitor

Newly Developed Mega Pixel 1/4.7-inch Type 3-CCD Camera System. DSR-PDX10 incorporates 3, 1/4.7-inch type Advanced HAD? CCD chips, each with a total of 1,070,000 pixels. (690,000 effective pixels for video acquisition in 4:3 mode, and 1,000,000 pixels for still-image capture). 14-bit DXP (Digital Extended Processor) Use of 14-bit A/D conversion combined with 14-bit digital processing drastically reduces the noise commonly seen across dark areas of a picture. This precision of digital processing also contributes to expanding the dynamic range of the camera so that both dark and light areas of a picture are reproduced with more contrast, thus reducing the wash-out effect. Advanced HAD CCD Technology Incorporates the new Advanced HAD CCD technology. This is another key to reproducing high-quality pictures with reduced noise, even in dark shooting environments and with dark subjects. Optical Super SteadyShot? Function Employs the Super SteadyShot system in which the horizontal and vertical movements during camera work are detected independently by the sensors. The active lens adjusts and optically compensates for unsteadiness, while maintaining image quality. Switchable 4:3 and 16:9 Recording Modes Captures images in both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios. This function is easily selected from the menu. Precision 16:9 Technology and Wider Angle of View in 16:9 Mode A sufficient amount of pixels are used to reproduce high resolution pictures in the 16:9 aspect ratio. The Mega Pixel CCD enables an even wider angle of view in the 16:9 mode. Custom Presets The DSR-PDX10 offers a Custom Preset feature, allowing the operator to store and later recall the desired camera settings. The following camera parameters can be preset: Color Level, Sharpness, White Balance Shift, AE Shift and AGC Limit (+6 dB or +12 dB).
